Jan Siegers is de geestelijk vader en parcoursbouwer van de SGW in Norg. Zijn enthousiasme werkt aanstekelijk. Vlak voor het begin van de cross geeft hij nog een snelle rondleiding. ,,Er komt veel bij kijken. Het is veel werk om alles op te bouwen. Je hebt er gewoon heel veel vrijwilligers voor nodig. Op de beide wedstrijddagen zijn ruim honderd mensen in touw, van catering tot hindernisjury, tot bouwers.”

Het gebrek aan vrijwilligers is voor veel organisaties een probleem, daarin is de SGW niet uniek. Norg was ook ooit van de kalender, maar keerde terug. De SGW in Westerbork ging dit jaar niet door. Toch zegt Siegers dat de veelzijdige tak van paardensport in opkomst is. Het lijkt wel een beetje het kip en ei verhaal. Als er geen wedstrijden in de regio zijn, waarom zou je dan veel tijd steken in de veelzijdige training die nodig is? En als er geen deelnemers zijn, waarom zou je dan een (dure) wedstrijd organiseren?

Ook Eddy Korringa, ook deze keer in Norg weer de KNHS-vertegenwoordiger, is positief over de ontwikkeling die de sport doormaakt. ,,Er is veel anadacht voor veiligheid en er zijn ook mooie wedstrijden. Het klopt dat we even een dipje hebben gehad, zo zijn Oenkerk en Westerbork gestopt. Maar we hebben een wedstrijd in Exloo, deze wedstrijd in Norg en dan straks nog die rond het Rono-strand, dus het gaat zeker niet slecht.”
Korringa ziet op de langere termijn veel perspectief voor deze tak van paardensport. ,,Je bent lekker buiten bezig en je bent ook heel intensief met je paard aan de gang. Je bent echt de hele dag onder de pannen. Dat trekt toch wel een hele specifieke groep paardenliefhebbers aan.”
De deelnemers komen zonder uitzondering vol enthousiasme over de eindstreep. ,,Dit is zo leuk om te doen!”, lacht amazone Dewi Gorter. ,,Je bent echt een hele dag met je paard bezig. Je rijdt eerst dressuur, dan heb je een springparcours en dan rijd je nog de cross. Dat is echt het hoogtepunt.”
De hoogste klasse die in Norg voor de paarden werd verreden was de klasse M, met Jordy Wilken als afgetekende winnaar. Hij eindigde met Amarillo na de dressuur, het springen en de cross op een totaal van slechts 28,7 strafpunten en bleef daarmee Bianca Hol met Sweet Dreams (38,5) en Noor Kuilboer metr Flo-Jo (40,0) ruimschoots voor. De klasse Z voor pony’s werd gewonnen door Jill Streppel, die met SB Chubby Lee als enige de wedstrijd uitreed.
